Harlem is a well-known neighborhood in the Upper Manhattan part of New York City. It has roots as a Dutch village organized in 1658, and is named after Haarlem, a city located in the Netherlands. The Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s and 1930s gave rise to the Apollo Theater and many other entertainment venues including jazz clubs, cabarets, and dance halls. The Edge Harlem: 101 Edgecombe Avenue – If you like jerk chicken or jerk seafood dishes, expect to spend around $15 to $20. But if you’re on a tighter budget, there are plenty of choices on the brunch menu and dinner menu reflecting a touch of British and Jamaican heritage. The Edge Harlem was established in 2014 to pay tribute to the spirit of Harlem; known for its cozy rustic décor, it is situated in a building where Langston Hughes and other key Harlem Renaissance figures met.

The Noodle: 370 Malcom X Boulevard – The menu is a plethora of spicy cumin and curry dishes, soup noodle dishes, vegetarian/vegan options, dumplings, wontons, and “Street Eats” like a Scallion Pancake, Bao Slider, and Veggie Spring Roll. Most main dishes are in the $14 to $16 range. And this is just its opening menu; on the restaurant’s website, the owners promise new additions to come.

Clay: 553 Manhattan Ave. – The decor is rustic and there are plentiful food options on the menu. For brunch, you can get avocado toast, pancakes, sandwiches, oysters, and other choices at Brooklyn prices. The "Sundowner" menu consists of baked in-house goodies, burgers, appetizers, salads, and desserts while the dinner menu offers a choice of fish, chicken, pasta, and steak.

Clove Indian Restaurant & Bar: 1592 Amsterdam Ave.– The menu consists of appetizers, soups, salads, curries, kurma, biriyani, malai, and other Indian delicacies. There’s also a vegetarian menu, or you can select from a range of sizzling tandoori dishes and chef specialties. There’s a lot to pick from but the prices are fairly standard for New York Indian food. And with a beer and alcohol menu, you can stay for the nightlife too.

Belle Harlem: 2363 Adam Clayton Powell Blvd – Originally opening as a chef’s table concept, Belle modified this format with more distanced tables and a covered patio. The menu consists of fresh bagels and pastries and a compact selection of breakfast and lunch items, including an omelet, oatmeal, quiche, or elbow pasta with sausage and broccolini in an herbed garlic cream sauce. And, you can grab yourself a cup of hot chocolate while you’re at it!
