Whether you're looking for a funky jacket for this winter or some vintage jeans to incorporate into your closet, New York City is rife with thrift shops that carry everything from antique jewelry to household knickknacks. You don't need to shell out your hard-earned money when there are second-hand gems just waiting to be discovered — not to mention they come at a much lower cost. Though the city may have plenty of thrift shops, some are overpriced and will cost you the same as a brand-new purchase, so we've rounded up our favorite affordable faves so you can skip all the rest.
If you're in search of some funky eclectic finds, head to East Williamsburg to browse the sprawling expanse of Urban Jungle. This spot has everything from '90s dresses to Hawaiian button-ups and you're sure to find something entirely unique to add to your closet. Though there's plenty to see here, don't expect to see modern brands — this spot has mostly kitschy vintage finds.
With locations scattered all over Manhattan (under the name No Relation Vintage) and Brooklyn, L-Train is a staple for any avid thrifter. They offer a wide selection of graphic tees, retro sweatshirts, sweater vests, jackets and vintage denim that you won't find anywhere else, all at a reasonable price tag.
10 ft Single by Stella Dallas has a bit more variety than your typical thrift store, with sections for slip dresses, chunky knit sweaters and even corset tops. The store is divided into two sections — the front room with cheaper finds and the back fully stocked with high-quality vintage pieces. There's a lot to see here, so get ready to hunt for some hidden thrifted treasure.
For those a bit intimidated by thrift shopping, Buffalo Exchange offers a more curated thrift experience. You can find high-end modern brands here for a fraction of the cost, along with affordable basics like jeans, blouses, and sundresses. If you're looking to get rid of some items, you can also sell your gently used clothing here for store credit or cash (though they are fairly picky about what items they accept).
Head to Mother of Junk if you're ready for some home goods and thrifted mayhem. The store isn't very organized but has plenty of treasures for decorating your home, from funky glassware to vintage poster prints — so get ready to dig in.
Similar to Buffalo Exchange, Beacon's Closet offers a curated thrift experience with plenty of modern and trendy pieces you can add to your wardrobe. Though this shop is a bit pricier than your average thrift store, you'll cut down on time spent scrounging through racks and racks of vintage goods.
