Greenpoint, Brooklyn Living Guide 2021

Greenpoint is Brooklyn’s northernmost neighborhood. While once a manufacturing center, today it is known for its nightlife, vintage stores, and historic buildings. Waterfront views and authentic Polish food also make Greenpoint a unique place to live. Plus, it affords easy access to Manhattan by subway, while Long Island City, Queens, an emerging cultural hub, is just over a short bridge.

Greenpoint, Brooklyn Apartment Rentals

In between the commercial corridors of Manhattan Avenue, Franklin Street, and Greenpoint Avenue, Greenpoint is primarily residential. Apartment buildings here are closely packed, but the streets have a cozy vibe and are often tree-lined. It can be hard to believe you’re so close to Manhattan, or even the East River, where you’ll find a couple of waterfront parks and piers.

The Greenpoint House is just a few blocks from the waterfront. Recently renovated, it has spacious living rooms, hardwood floors, large windows, and basement and backyard amenities. It’s hard to find a spacious apartment at a reasonable price in New York City, but we’ve found the perfect spot right here in Greenpoint.

Plus, it’s only a 2-minute walk to the Greenpoint Ave. subway station, where you can take the G train, transfer to the L in two stops, and be in Manhattan in just 30 minutes. There are also multiple bus lines running through the neighborhood. And when you feel you need a little open space, WNYC Transmitter Park and McCarren Park are just blocks away, as are Bushwick Inlet Park and Marsha P. Johnson State Park.

Parts of Greenpoint are still industrial, but there is so much to enjoy along the livelier blocks in the neighborhood. The primary industrial section begins along Greenpoint Avenue past McGuinness Boulevard.

What Is Greenpoint, Brooklyn, Known For?

Besides being young, hip, and trendy, Greenpoint is mainly known for its history. The area, including Williamsburg and Bushwick, was purchased by the Dutch in 1638. It was named for an abundance of trees. During the 1800s, it became a center for glass and pottery making, cast-iron manufacturing, and printing, as well as for oil refineries. It was also a shipbuilding and heavy manufacturing center.

The Monitor, a Civil War gunship, was launched from here in 1862. But Greenpoint’s modern history is shaped by the settling of Polish, Russian, and Italian immigrants from the 1880s on, a trend that continued following World War II. Actress Mae West was born in Greenpoint in 1893. Starting in the 1990s, the neighborhood began a transformation as young newcomers sparked a surge in apartment rentals and opening of the small restaurants that line the busy streets today.
